This is an introductory course in combinatorics, or discrete mathematics. The catalog description: Classic puzzles of recreational mathematics; matching theory and graph theory; enumeration techniques; combinatorial analysis. We will cover all these topics and more.


50% homework & participation, 50% exams. Regular homework will be assigned and graded. Late homework assignments will not be accepted, but you may drop your lowest assignment. We will have also two midterms and a final exam, dates to be announced. Exams will be based on lectures and homework.

Cumulative final: 20%


The recommended textbook for the course is Introductory Combinatorics, 5th edition, by Brualdi. I may also sometimes consult other textbooks in preparing my lectures. If you come to all the lectures and take good notes, you might not need to purchase the textbook.

I will hold regular office hours (days and times to be announced), or you can email me to set up a meeting at another time, by appointment. My office is MW540, on the 5th floor of the Math Tower.
